Tax Assistant / Senior Tax Assistant

Salary – £28,000 to £35,000

London – Hybrid

Our Private Client Tax department is looking for a Tax Assistant to join an exciting and growing team.

We are seeking someone to assist with routine personal tax compliance and ad hoc advisory work. The role includes supporting senior colleagues with their client portfolios.

This position follows a hybrid working pattern, combining in-office and remote work, with approximately two days per week in the City office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preparation and filing of tax returns
  • Dealing with a range of capital gains tax issues
  • Liaising with clients, banks and other third parties
  • Handling HMRC queries
  • Attending client meetings
  • Data gathering and preparing internal management statistics
  • Proposing fees, issuing client bills and regularly reviewing WIP against agreed budgets
  • Undertaking research for the management team and Partners

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Technical Expertise

  • Partially or fully ATT-qualified
  • Previous private client tax experience is essential
  • Understands and applies basic tax practice, risk management and quality control protocols, seeking guidance where appropriate
  • Able to prepare basic tax computations and returns
  • Competent in using tax software applications
  • Produces basic written work on tax topics relevant to client assignments

Enterprise

  • Understands the relationship between chargeable hours and fees
  • Maintains strong awareness of budgets and monitors WIP on an ongoing basis

Business Building

  • Shows enthusiasm and represents the firm’s values
  • Identifies constructive recommendations for clients
  • Demonstrates a basic understanding of client needs

Client Relationships

  • Appreciates that strong client relationships are essential
  • Chooses appropriate communication methods (e.g., phone vs email)
  • Understands that client relationships include both external and internal stakeholders

Delivery

  • Takes responsibility for allocated assignments and tasks
  • Manages own workload and works with managers and above to ensure timely completion
  • Seeks assistance or advice promptly when needed

Interpersonal Skills

  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation communication skills
  • Confident, friendly and professional manner
  • Strong team player who supports collective goals and assists colleagues where needed
  • Comfortable suggesting ideas to improve operational efficiency
