The firm, a Top 10 practice, has provided tailored financial and professional services to private clients and their business interests for over a century. They serve clients including individuals, families, entrepreneurs, charities, trustees, professional advisers and businesses from multiple offices in the UK.


The Guildford office provides a range of services: to private clients, medium sized companies typically owner managed or family owned business, HNWIs/UHNWIs, non-doms and family offices.


Private Client Tax Services

Our Private Client Tax team deal with compliance obligations and reporting requirements for a range of individuals while also offering high level planning advice on a domestic and international level.


Purpose of role:

To manage own portfolio of clients; working with senior staff on consultancy and advisory personal tax planning and offshore projects. Line management and development of other members of the team.


Key responsibilities:

  • Manage a portfolio of personal clients with complex tax affairs, including non-UK domiciled individuals, HNWIs, and some trusts.
  • Day to day responsibility for meeting both client and compliance deadlines, monitoring time limits and elections.
  • Liaise proactively with clients on advisory matters.
  • Manage HMRC enquiries and disclosures and dealing with HMRC correspondence of both compliance and advisory nature.
  • Assisting Partners in, and where appropriate, lead tax planning projects such as non-domicile issues, onshore and offshore trusts (and other structures) and, capital gains and inheritance tax issues.
  • Responsible for billing and monitoring budgets.
  • Review compliance and basic advisory work prepared by more junior members of staff
  • Assist with managing junior member of staff including helping them with technical and personal development.
  • Engage in personal business development activities and support business development activities of the team.
  • Present at technical training sessions.
  • Ensuring internal procedures are adhered to and responsible for some departmental administrative tasks.


Key Competencies:

  • Planning and Organising - must be able to plan workload in order to prioritise work to meet conflicting deadlines and cope with pressure. Must be able to instruct others, delegate appropriately and control delegated work.
  • Written and Oral communication - good written communication skills are necessary to draft reports and correspondence with clients and HMRC to explain technical issues in an easily understandable manner. Must have good inter-personal skills to be able to liaise with clients and other staff members.
  • Technical Expertise - maintain technical knowledge. Need to be able to understand issues, spot potential problems and provide solutions.
  • Team work - provide link in chain to supervise staff members below and support Partners above. To be a reference point for technical and other queries to motivate staff and liaise with Partners when difficulties arise.
  • Account Management - maintain portfolio of clients and able to retain and develop relationship with existing clients. Responsible for preparing budgets on jobs, time chargeability and WIP and debtor management. To be commercially astute.

Key Experience/Skills:

  • Significant relevant experience gained within a professional services firm.
  • Sound knowledge of private client tax issues with particular experience of advising non domiciled individuals and dealing with complex capital gains tax and inheritance tax matters.
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering tax planning/advisory projects.
  • Demonstrable experience of managing complex compliance issues.
  • People management and organisational skills.

    Administration of all stages of payroll processing for a portfolio of outsourced payrolls, including scanning information and monitoring the payroll processing cycle to ensure that information on payroll spreadsheets is maintained and kept up-to-date at all times.     This is a position that can be adaptive to your expertise. In essence it is mixed, so wide knowledge is required. However, if you have certain strengths in certain areas, but are not as well versed in others, there is the freedom to tailor a portfolio around this.
