The firm, a Top 10 practice, has provided tailored financial and professional services to private clients and their business interests for over a century. They serve clients including individuals, families, entrepreneurs, charities, trustees, professional advisers and businesses from multiple offices in the UK.


The Guildford office provides a range of services: to private clients, medium sized companies typically owner managed or family owned business, HNWIs/UHNWIs, non-doms and family offices.


Purpose of role:

To ensure that the annual tax compliance work is completed and planning opportunities are identified for a portfolio of mixed clients.


Key responsibilities:

Client compliance work

  • Delivering high quality service to clients
  • Responsible for a mixed portfolio of clients which may including sole traders, partners, partnerships or small corporates and trusts
  • Liaising with third parties and the clients in respect of the collation of tax return information
  • Ensuring administration of the portfolio is completed including all aspects of compliance, accounts, tax returns and tax computations
  • Ensuring clients are notified of their tax liabilities in a timely manner
  • Drafting correspondence for a managers review

Client planning work

  • Identifying possible planning possibilities, e.g. beneficial elections and claims
  • Answering client ad-hoc questions and enquiries in respect of the clients\' personal tax affairs


Yearly routine checks and compliance

  • Ensuring S&W procedures on annual tax cycle are complied with
  • Collating and maintaining client information
  • Client billing and time analysis


Supervising trainees

  • Assisting tax trainees with department procedures.
  • Assisting other group members in professional work.


Key Competencies:

  • Planning and Organising: must be able to plan workload in order to prioritise work to meet conflicting deadlines and cope with pressure.
  • Written and verbal communication: good written communication skills are necessary to draft correspondence with clients and HMRC to explain technical issues in an easily understandable manner. Must have good inter-personal skills to be able to liaise with clients and other staff members.
  • Team work: provide link in chain to supervise staff members below and support managers above.
  • Technical Expertise: maintain technical knowledge obtained from exam qualifications


Candidate Profile



  • Part-qualified accountant (ACA/ACCA/CA) and/or ATT qualified


Key Experience/Skills:

  • Significant experience gained within a professional services firm.
  • Good knowledge of private tax compliance and possibly some exposure to planning/advisory work.
  • Technical knowledge to include CGT, IHT, business tax aspects. Partnership and corporate experience will be useful.
  • Ability to write letters explaining planning issues as well as verbal communication skills.
  • Computer literate using a range of applications/programmes ideally including Digita software.

    £28,000 - £35,000 per annum
