PERSONAL TAX MANAGER

 

The firm are a very highly regarded Top 100 practice, seeking a Personal Tax Manager.  The main focus of this role is to manage workflow of the tax team and to continuously review the current way of working and successfully implement improvements. 

 

Your core responsibilities will include:

 

  • Manage compliance workflow for the personal tax team - monitor time allocations, budgets and deadlines, including data insight for internal management reporting
  • Proactively manage a diverse portfolio of personal tax clients and support Partners with compliance work and ad hoc tax advisory work as required, ensuring compliance with Revenue and in-house deadlines.
  • Build long lasting client relationships.  Develop and apply your technical and commercial knowledge to provide expert advice.
  • Ensure assignments are completed to a high standard, on time and within budgets
  • Liaise and negotiate with HMRC on behalf of clients. Respond to HMRC enquiries.
  • Responsible for billing own portfolio and managing own WIP
  • Review prepared tax returns
  • Input in to service and product pricing, including assisting with new client quotes
  • Liaise and collaborate with the compliance team and other departments on client matters, identifying cross-selling opportunities
  • Participate in business development and marketing activities including networking in the business community to develop own external profile and the firm\'s brand
  • Contribute to winning new work by proactively managing existing clients and networking
  • Lead potential new clients meetings bringing them on board
  • Maintain up to date and relevant technical knowledge of the industry and national economic issues
  • Line manage, develop and mentor junior staff including overseeing work and assisting team members to support their performance and career development

About You

 

  • A minimum of 5 years UK practice personal tax experience with some managerial experience
  • Ideally CTA and/or STEP qualified, but no essential
  • Strong client relationship skills
  • Proven project management and collaborative leadership skills
  • Experience and willingness to network and develop new business leads
  • Extensive experience in cooperating with HMRC
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written
  • A positive, confident and proactive attitude
  • Ability to prioritise and meet tight timeframes with high quality output

    JOB DESCRIPTION

     

     

    Job Title:

    Personal/Mixed Tax Senior

     

     

    Responsible to:

    Head of Global Private Client Advisory

     

     

    Hours per week:

    35 hours – flexi-time contract

    Main Purpose of the Role:

     

    Manage mostly personal tax compliance for a large portfolio of clients with some associated corporation tax. Provide a supporting tax consultancy service to senior members of the team on a diverse range of issues such as incorporation, self-employed tax planning, capital gains tax planning, inheritance tax planning, etc.

     

    Background:

     

    The tax department contains a mixture of managers and staff. This role will be split between compliance and consultancy and approximately 90% personal tax and 10% corporate tax.

     

    Main Duties and Responsibilities:

     

    1. Responsibility for the compliance function for both personal tax and corporate tax clients. This includes:

     

    ​ Preparation of personal and corporation tax returns for a broad range of clients

    ​ Monitoring tax return progress to ensure timely completion and submission to the Revenue

    ​ Advising personal and corporate tax clients of tax liabilities due on a timely basis

    ​ Liaising directly with clients to ensure both accurate and prompt completion of tax returns

    ​ Preparation of PAYE Settlement Agreements (PSA)

    ​ Communicating effectively with clients both orally and in writing

    ​ Dealing with all client queries promptly and efficiently

    ​ Reporting to the client partner on all matters relevant to the client's tax affairs

    2. Dealing with ad hoc tax consultancy assignments to support the Tax Partner and senior members of the team as and when required, such as:

    ​ Advising on the tax implications of incorporation;

    ​ Capital gains tax planning – principle private residence exemption, optimum use of losses

    ​ Taxation of share scheme options and gains

    ​ Assisting the Corporate Finance partner on tax issues relating to the purchase and sale of private companies, both client and referral work

    ​ Enterprise Investment Scheme

    3. Identifying tax planning opportunities and following these through with the relevant partner

    4. Dealing with detailed Revenue enquiries from inception to completion

    Other Duties and Tasks:

    Attend clients' premises as and when required

    Work with Partners and staff to provide a personal, professional service for the benefit of both clients and the firm.

    Such other duties as may be reasonably expected of the post holder.

    Decision Making/ Freedom to Act:

    This is a senior role in which the individual works autonomously and will take necessary decisions in the ordinary course of providing a comprehensive tax service to clients.

    The role involves working with Tax Managers and a Tax Junior, and reports to the Head of Global Private Client Advisory.

    Supervision of Others:

    The role involves delegating work to the Tax Junior and to review the work when completed, assisting the Tax Junior where necessary.

    Dimensions of Job:

    Responsibility for the compliance function for approx. 300 personal tax clients including high net worth individuals, partnerships, sole-traders, non-residents, and non-domiciled individuals and approx. 20 corporate tax clients, mainly owner-managed businesses.

    Qualifications and Experience

     

    A minimum of 3 years' experience in a mixed tax role within a professional practice

    Good personal tax experience is essential and a working knowledge of corporate tax

    ATT qualified or qualified by experience

    Demonstrates a good level of understanding of own technical/ professional function

    Experience of working on long term client relationships and of working on a fee basis with clients

    Experience of working in an accountancy practice at a senior level

    Working knowledge of Pertax an advantage

    Computer literate

    A fantastic opportunity for a part-qualified ACA / ACCA Auditor to join one of the largest Practices in the country, who can offer support and growth up to and beyond the completion of your qualification.

    The Role

    Carrying out Audits using a bespoke risk based approach for a range of clients across a variety of sectors including media, technology, property, hospitality and not-for-profit. Act as assistant on larger clients, completing relevant sections of the Audit file as discussed with Senior staff at the planning meeting. Acting as Senior on smaller Audits, reporting directly to the Manager. You would be responsible for planning the Audit file through to the completion sections. Supervising and delegating work to less experienced members of the Audit team. Appraising less experienced member of the team following completion of jobs worked on with them. 90% Audit focused.

    The successful candidate will have at least 18 months\' experience working within a similar sized Practice in the Audit or Audit & Accounts department. Ideally, you will be studying either your ACA or ACCA qualification, and this firm will continue study support for this, as well as assisting with exit fees from your current firm if required.
