The firm, a Top 10 practice, has provided tailored financial and professional services to private clients and their business interests for over a century. They serve clients including individuals, families, entrepreneurs, charities, trustees, professional advisers and businesses from multiple offices in the UK.

 

The Guildford office provides a range of services: to private clients, medium sized companies typically owner managed or family owned business, HNWIs/UHNWIs, non-doms and family offices.

 

Purpose of role:

To ensure that the annual tax compliance work is completed and planning opportunities are identified for a portfolio of mixed clients.

 

Key responsibilities:

Client compliance work

  • Delivering high quality service to clients
  • Responsible for a mixed portfolio of clients which may including sole traders, partners, partnerships or small corporates and trusts
  • Liaising with third parties and the clients in respect of the collation of tax return information
  • Ensuring administration of the portfolio is completed including all aspects of compliance, accounts, tax returns and tax computations
  • Ensuring clients are notified of their tax liabilities in a timely manner
  • Drafting correspondence for a managers review

Client planning work

  • Identifying possible planning possibilities, e.g. beneficial elections and claims
  • Answering client ad-hoc questions and enquiries in respect of the clients\' personal tax affairs

 

Yearly routine checks and compliance

  • Ensuring S&W procedures on annual tax cycle are complied with
  • Collating and maintaining client information
  • Client billing and time analysis

 

Supervising trainees

  • Assisting tax trainees with department procedures.
  • Assisting other group members in professional work.

 

Key Competencies:

  • Planning and Organising: must be able to plan workload in order to prioritise work to meet conflicting deadlines and cope with pressure.
  • Written and verbal communication: good written communication skills are necessary to draft correspondence with clients and HMRC to explain technical issues in an easily understandable manner. Must have good inter-personal skills to be able to liaise with clients and other staff members.
  • Team work: provide link in chain to supervise staff members below and support managers above.
  • Technical Expertise: maintain technical knowledge obtained from exam qualifications

 

Candidate Profile

 

Education/Qualifications:

  • Part-qualified accountant (ACA/ACCA/CA) and/or ATT qualified

 

Key Experience/Skills:

  • Significant experience gained within a professional services firm.
  • Good knowledge of private tax compliance and possibly some exposure to planning/advisory work.
  • Technical knowledge to include CGT, IHT, business tax aspects. Partnership and corporate experience will be useful.
  • Ability to write letters explaining planning issues as well as verbal communication skills.
  • Computer literate using a range of applications/programmes ideally including Digita software.

    Responsibilities:

    Administration of all stages of payroll processing for a portfolio of outsourced payrolls, including scanning information and monitoring the payroll processing cycle to ensure that information on payroll spreadsheets is maintained and kept up-to-date at all times. Ensuring that all information for payrolls is made available for processing by outsourced payroll providers. Preparation of letters, payroll reports and payslips for submission to clients. Liaising with clients and HM Revenue & Customs when dealing with payroll related queries. Assistance with billing, including preparation and submission of invoices to clients. General administrative duties, e.g. photocopying, scanning and filing, responding to letters and emails.

    What will you need to be successful in this role?

    Good working knowledge of payroll processing procedures and legislation Ability to communicate with both clients and HMRC Experience within a payroll office / bureau environment Use of own initiative to follow processes through Conversant with Sage Payroll software Experience using Xero is desirable IT Literate (MS Word, Outlook and, especially, Excel) Good attention to detail Organisation/time management Enthusiastic and willing to learn
