Private Client Tax Assistant Manager – £62,000 – London

My client is the 12th largest accountancy brand and the 12th largest audit practice in the UK. Introduction to the Division


Our tax service line covers five key areas: Corporate Tax, Human Capital, Indirect Tax, Private Clients and Tax Disputes. The team has grown significantly in recent years and has ambitious plans for the future.

We work across all sectors, with specialisms in insurance, property, technology, international businesses, high net worth individuals and globally mobile individuals.


Purpose and aim of the role
The role requires an ambitious, confident individual, with a strong academic background to join the

Private Client Tax Team.

As a Team we have a very broad range of clients, including a number of HNW and UHNW individuals and family groups.  Their tax affairs cover residence and domicile issues, UK and offshore Trusts, self-employed, company directors, landlords both resident and non-resident, with UK and overseas properties, partners of LLPs and LLCs.

The successful candidate will be a member of the Team, responsible for assisting the Private Client Tax managers and senior managers, Directors and Partners in servicing clients and delivering services.  They will take responsibility for their own work, and for managing and motivating junior staff.

They may have specialist skills but will primarily be responsible for assisting with the management of a condensed portfolio of clients in a variety of sectors in conjunction with more senior members of the Private Client Tax teams.  The successful candidate will review work with minimal Partner/Director/Manager input in respect of clients with straightforward personal Tax Returns.  They should also have an understanding of their own experience and know when to seek additional support.  They will also work on more complex clients alongside a Partner / Director / Manager.

Client Responsibilities

To be responsible for a portfolio of clients, some as the manager (under supervision of a more senior member of the team) and some as staff member (supporting the senior manager on the job), providing compliance and consultancy advice; responsibilities might include the following:

  • Liaising with clients and colleagues
  • Handling client queries
  • Reviewing clients’ Self Assessment Tax Returns prepared by the staff, and sign-off of letters/computations where permission has been designated by a manager, director or partner.
  • Completion/review of online CGT Returns and advising clients thereon
  • Support the delivery of advisory work on a wide range of tax planning issues, such as Trust & Estate planning, International aspects including pre-arrival and pre-departure planning, pension planning, profit extraction and issues for owner managed businesses.
  • Manage WIP and billing for own clients, ensuring commercial recoveries
  • Responsibility for ensuring procedures are adhered to for client’s on your allocation.


Special work/adhoc assignments

  • Participating in and assisting with Business Development opportunities, including attending new client meetings, and contributing to the regular articles that the Team produce for external newsletters
  • Responsibility for some administrative requirements and projects required to ensure the smooth operation of the Private Client Tax team.
  • Opportunities to train staff on Private Client matters
  • Investigation and resolution of Private Client queries


People Management 

  • The post-holder will be jointly responsible for managing junior staff, mentoring and providing feedback


We believe strongly in encouraging the personal development of each member of staff and the Firm supports and provides internal and external training courses as well as professional updates on technical and non-technical subjects.  In addition to managing their own development, individuals are expected to encourage and take an active role in the training and development of junior staff. 


Career progression is meritocratic. The Private Client Tax team is growing; there is therefore ample scope for progression.  Career progression is reviewed at the annual appraisal. 

Person Specification

  • Proven skills in PC work gained in practice
  • A good understanding of PC principles
  • Able to explain complex issues in a way non PC experts will understand
  • Up-to-date technical skills and experience, across a broad range of clients and areas of PC tax
  • Ability to manage a small client portfolio profitably.
  • Ability to support with tax advisory matters and report writing.
  • ACA/CA/CTA or equivalent
