AJ Chambers are currently representing a long-established and reputable not-for-profit organisation who are seeking a Payroll Manager for their office in Chelmsford. Reporting to the Finance Director, this role offers excellent opportunities to develop your skills set and progress within your career.

The Role

As Payroll Manager, you will be responsible for the accurate and timely delivery of the monthly payroll, management of the outsourced payroll service and the provision of payroll data.

Duties include:

  • Act as the key payroll contact, in liaising with the third-party outsourced company to ensure all relevant information is produced according to the timetable
  • Ensure pay is correct for staff, paying attention to adjustments such as sickness, starters, leavers etc.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation and keep up to date with any changes in legislation
  • Be the key contact for staff with payroll queries
  • Post the monthly payroll journal to the finance system
  • Ensure that monthly management accounts provide accurate expenditure information and that variances are explained
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual staffing budget
  • Deliver in-house payroll focussed training across the organisation to ensure understanding of key employee issues e.g. SSP, maternity/ paternity leave and pensions
  • Prepare statutory returns including Furlough returns and sleep in reports
  • Successful delivery of monthly payroll on time
  • Processing of timesheet and expense claims
  • Provide relevant pay information, such as confirmed shifts, according to the timetable
  • Process payments through BACS to third parties including HMRC, pension schemes and AOEs
  • Dealing with payroll enquiries
  • Calculating pay adjustments as and when required
  • Ensure staff pay records are correct and up to date
  • Provide timely and accurate reports as requested
  • Completing monthly pension returns relating to pay, auto enrolment and year-end
  • Manage pensions auto enrolment in conjunction with HR colleagues
  • Dealing with pension enquiries relating to pay
  • Process PAYE settlement for payment, ensuring accuracy
  • Producing the payroll journals and payroll reconciliations


The Candidate

  • CIPP qualified, or equivalent
  • Significant experience in payroll
  • Experience using financial accounting systems
  • Knowledge of payroll systems, Inland Revenue legislation, Pension Scheme regulations relating to pay, Conditions of Service relating to pay
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

    Personal/Mixed Tax Senior



    Responsible to:

    Head of Global Private Client Advisory



    Hours per week:

    35 hours – flexi-time contract







    Main Purpose of the Role:


    Manage mostly personal tax compliance for a large portfolio of clients with some associated corporation tax. Provide a supporting tax consultancy service to senior members of the team on a diverse range of issues such as incorporation, self-employed tax planning, capital gains tax planning, inheritance tax planning, etc.




    The tax department contains a mixture of managers and staff. This role will be split between compliance and consultancy and approximately 90% personal tax and 10% corporate tax.


    Main Duties and Responsibilities:


    1. Responsibility for the compliance function for both personal tax and corporate tax clients. This includes:


    ​ Preparation of personal and corporation tax returns for a broad range of clients

    ​ Monitoring tax return progress to ensure timely completion and submission to the Revenue

    ​ Advising personal and corporate tax clients of tax liabilities due on a timely basis

    ​ Liaising directly with clients to ensure both accurate and prompt completion of tax returns

    ​ Preparation of PAYE Settlement Agreements (PSA)

    ​ Communicating effectively with clients both orally and in writing

    ​ Dealing with all client queries promptly and efficiently

    ​ Reporting to the client partner on all matters relevant to the client's tax affairs

    2. Dealing with ad hoc tax consultancy assignments to support the Tax Partner and senior members of the team as and when required, such as:

    ​ Advising on the tax implications of incorporation;

    ​ Capital gains tax planning – principle private residence exemption, optimum use of losses

    ​ Taxation of share scheme options and gains

    ​ Assisting the Corporate Finance partner on tax issues relating to the purchase and sale of private companies, both client and referral work

    ​ Enterprise Investment Scheme

    3. Identifying tax planning opportunities and following these through with the relevant partner

    4. Dealing with detailed Revenue enquiries from inception to completion

    Other Duties and Tasks:

    Attend clients' premises as and when required

    Work with Partners and staff to provide a personal, professional service for the benefit of both clients and the firm.

    Such other duties as may be reasonably expected of the post holder.

    Decision Making/ Freedom to Act:

    This is a senior role in which the individual works autonomously and will take necessary decisions in the ordinary course of providing a comprehensive tax service to clients.

    The role involves working with Tax Managers and a Tax Junior, and reports to the Head of Global Private Client Advisory.

    Supervision of Others:

    The role involves delegating work to the Tax Junior and to review the work when completed, assisting the Tax Junior where necessary.

    Dimensions of Job:

    Responsibility for the compliance function for approx. 300 personal tax clients including high net worth individuals, partnerships, sole-traders, non-residents, and non-domiciled individuals and approx. 20 corporate tax clients, mainly owner-managed businesses.

    Qualifications and Experience


    A minimum of 3 years' experience in a mixed tax role within a professional practice

    Good personal tax experience is essential and a working knowledge of corporate tax

    ATT qualified or qualified by experience

    Demonstrates a good level of understanding of own technical/ professional function

    Experience of working on long term client relationships and of working on a fee basis with clients

    Experience of working in an accountancy practice at a senior level

    Working knowledge of Pertax an advantage

    Computer literate

    The Corporation Tax team are looking for a Semi-Senior who is confident with Partners and clients, possesses excellent organisational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide accurate work in a timely and cost-effective manner.     The Role

    A Tax Semi Senior/Senior (level of appointed will depend on experience of the applicant) is being sought to join and complement the Bournemouth tax group.


    The role will report directly to the Manager/Senior Manager and will involve assisting the team with the day-to-day responsibilities of managing a large portfolio of both personal and corporate clients.


    The corporate tax portfolio is made up of a number of medium to large companies with a variety of businesses, including a professional football club, property investment and development, manufacturing and E-commerce. The personal tax portfolio is made up of high net worth individuals, including company directors, self-employed individuals, small to medium sized partnerships and trusts.   The role will also provide the opportunity to gain experience on advisory projects.

    A fantastic opportunity for a part-qualified ACA / ACCA Auditor to join one of the largest Practices in the country, who can offer support and growth up to and beyond the completion of your qualification.

    The Role

    Carrying out Audits using a bespoke risk based approach for a range of clients across a variety of sectors including media, technology, property, hospitality and not-for-profit. Act as assistant on larger clients, completing relevant sections of the Audit file as discussed with Senior staff at the planning meeting. Acting as Senior on smaller Audits, reporting directly to the Manager. You would be responsible for planning the Audit file through to the completion sections. Supervising and delegating work to less experienced members of the Audit team. Appraising less experienced member of the team following completion of jobs worked on with them. 90% Audit focused.

    The successful candidate will have at least 18 months\' experience working within a similar sized Practice in the Audit or Audit & Accounts department. Ideally, you will be studying either your ACA or ACCA qualification, and this firm will continue study support for this, as well as assisting with exit fees from your current firm if required.
