Corporate & Business Tax Senior Manager | Top 40 Firm

The firm have identified a need for an experienced qualified tax adviser with relevant experience in the tax affairs of companies, businesses and their owners. The role will be based in Milton Keynes, but completing work for partners across offices.

The Role

The main duties will involve:

Managing the delivery of the compliance function on a designated allocation of clients, working to the local partners and working within the team to ensure consistent delivery throughout the annual cycles across the department and firm as a whole.

The compliance function covers corporate and income tax returns (partnership and personal). Where ATED, NRLR, share scheme (ERS) returns and forms P11D are required, these are managed as a centralized process, however, a good working knowledge and client liaison is still expected. As the preparation of returns and computations is wholly computerised the successful candidate will be expected to be fully conversant with the appropriate software (alphatax and CCH ideally).

The diverse client base provides a challenging range of queries and opportunities. A good working knowledge of research & development tax credits, capital allowances, corporate debt rules, group related corporate tax matters, partnerships and tax accounting is required. Wider knowledge on areas in relation to personal taxation, employment taxes, share options and venture capital reliefs will be helpful in fulfilling the role. Although ad hoc advice on their portfolio will be required, the provision of high level technical support to the Partners in advising clients on tax planning opportunities is not a required part of the role but can be incorporated should this be a requirement of the successful candidate.

Contribution to the general management of the corporate and business tax department (20+ across the 4 offices). Providing input at regular management meetings.

Assistance with the training of tax staff either on the job based or by way of participation in regular technical updates.

Appraisal of junior staff with responsibility for development and performance.

Identifying new opportunities within the client portfolio and working with the wider team to deliver additional services where appropriate.

The Person

The successful candidate will be a qualified Chartered Tax Adviser and have at least 5 years post-qualification experience of working within a business tax department of an accountancy practice. A high standard of written and verbal communication is essential. Strong organisation and time management skills will be required for the role.

Being experienced and flexible team workers, the strongest candidates will share the firms focused client service ethic and respond proactively and positively to the demands of a growing team.

Role Overview


You will be reporting to the Associate Director and provide hands on support with UK tax compliance and planning matters. This role has the opportunity to progress to Tax Manager in the future.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare tax returns accurately
  • Provide advice that includes income tax reliefs, residence and domicile, the remittance basis of taxation, capital gains tax, ATED and inheritance tax
  • Be client facing and work together with the Associate Director.
  • Keep clients informed of progress in relation to all aspects of the service provided and maintain regular contact. Respond quickly to as well as anticipate client requests or needs.
  • Recognise any new business opportunities for the Tax Department and other departments for our business. This could be with new or existing clients.
  • Liaise with HMRC, clients, banks and other professional bodies
  • Actively participate in bids/proposals for new work
  • Manage WIP and Billing process
  • Prepare ATED Returns and advise clients on income from property including SDLT

The successful candidate will ideally be:

  • A minimum 3 years of experience within a Tax Department.
  • Ideally either ATT/CTA qualified
  • Accounts knowledge would be a great benefit but not essential
  • Sound knowledge of UK income taxation and non-resident status issues
