AJ Chambers is working on an exciting opportunity for a recent graduate to join a growing accountancy practice in South West London. This role is a great starting point for anyone looking to get into accounting within practice! If successful, you will start in September.

You will be given a L7 apprenticeship agreement to study for either the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (“ICAEW”) or the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (“ACCA”) qualification during which time you will receive a broad range of practical experience while benefitting from a full apprenticeship study package.

What will you be doing?

You will be expected to develop a good understanding of current accounting standards and practices through course attendance and practical work experience.

With guidance, you will be expected to plan and organise work assignments, monitoring your own progress to ensure deadlines are met. You can expect to work on clients in a variety of sectors assisting them with such tasks as management accounts and VAT returns to the preparation of statutory accounts and advising on their corporation tax affairs. You can also expect to undertake audit and other assurance work as part of a larger team.

You will also assist with internal accounting procedures to ensure on successful completion of your exams you have a full and broad knowledge of the requirements of a qualified accountant.

There are strong opportunities for career progression with many trainees taking on managerial roles prior to qualification. Beyond qualification there are always opportunities to move into more senior positions within the firm subject to the specific strengths and characteristics of the individual.

What is required of you?

You will be expected to have a minimum of 136 UCAS points plus an Upper Second Class honours degree. English and maths skills are however vital to the role and you would therefore be expected to have grade 6 or above at GCSE in both these subjects.

We use IT in all our assignments and as such you must have strong IT skills, including being proficient in Excel and other Microsoft Office packages.

We are working with a leading Law Firm that is looking to add an experienced Revenue Controller with a legal background and a minimum of 6-12 months of Credit Control experience. This role is part of our Finance Team and reports to the Senior Revenue Controller.

You will be responsible for credit control for specific partners, billing and WIP management. This will involve gaining knowledge about clients, managing billing matters, ensuring clients are billed promptly and securing swift payment of invoices. You will be required to liaise with internal Partners and employees at all levels and external clients applying an assertive yet tactful approach.

Your Responsibilities and Deliverables

  • You will support a team of Partners and split time between sitting in Finance or with the specific legal practice groups to liaise directly with the Partners and lawyers and taking responsibility for their billing and credit control requirements, and closely monitoring billing and cash collection budgets and targets.
  • You will deal with a large portfolio of clients and liaise with them daily regarding their debts - predominantly via telephone. Updating the firm\'s credit control system (Aderant Expert Collections) for action tasks, reminders, follow up notes etc.
  • You will review daily bank statements and TT payments to ensure funds are allocated to the correct matters.
  • You will administer payments by credit/debit card.
  • You must arrange and attend monthly meetings with Partners to review WIP and debtors to agree on a course of action and follow-up to ensure completion in the agreed timescales.

Finance Business Partner (Agile Working)

We are currently working with an International Law Firm that, whilst not a virtual Firm, understand the benefits of adopting hybrid working. In September 2021, the Firm launched an Agile Working Pilot, the aim of which is to ensure that we combine the needs of their Firm, team, and individuals to arrive at an optimal hybrid working model for the future, combining the right blend of working in the office and remotely, dependent on role.

Your Role

Reporting to the Commercial Finance Manager, you will provide detailed analysis to improve understanding of the financial performance of fee-earning departments and assist in commercial decision making, carrying out detailed financial modelling and written commentary.

Based at our client\'s London office, this role will sit within the recently formed Business Partnering team, supporting the Commercial Finance Manager and Commercial Finance Business Partner.

There are circa 50 employees in the Finance team, and it is divided into four key areas:

  • Reporting and Analysis (including Management Accounts, Business Intelligence, Financial Control and Business Partnering teams)
  • Financial Systems
  • Accounts Payable and Cashiers; and
  • Revenue, Pricing and Credit Control

Your Role and Responsibilities

Business Partnering:

  • Support senior stakeholders both within and outside of Finance to encourage and support the strategic direction of the division.
  • Regularly review actual performance, prepare forecasts/projections, and monitor against business plans and budgets.
  • Support in the preparation of investment appraisals/business case analysis for recruitments/lateral hires and promotions.
  • Assist in identifying any financial issues and efficiency opportunities to enable the practice groups to undertake profit improvement initiatives.
  • Attend and engage in regular department meetings to ensure the depth of knowledge of each department is maintained.
  • Support discussions of financial performance, proactively challenging issues, driving through change and gaining commercial insight.
  • Monitoring and managing key financial targets (e.g., billing, chargeable hours, recovery, and profitability).

Financial Management:

  • Assist the production of monthly management information pack including KPIs and divisional commentaries.
  • Review operating results and actual performance of the overall business as well as individual departments, practice groups, partners, and fee-earners.
  • Assist in the budgeting and planning cycles for fee-earning departments.
  • Work with the Business Intelligence team to support profitability analysis at client, matter, work type, partner, and fee earner level.
  • Ad-hoc financial analysis and project work, analysing and understanding underlying financial data.
  • Assist in the overall improvement of understanding of financial KPIs and performance across the business.

Collaboration:

  • Work closely with the Business Intelligence team to help improve overall financial understanding of the business.
  • Establish relationships with key stakeholders such as DMPs, HoGs and support teams (HR, Business Development and Finance).
  • Collaboration with HR, including recruitment plans, business plans, forecasting headcount for budgets and targets, capacity management, salary review and bonuses, space planning, promotions and ad-hoc reviews of teams and individuals.
  • Collaboration with the BD department. Encouraging cross-selling across the Division and firm-wide, help identify opportunities to drive growth.

Your Qualifications and Experience

  • Qualified or part-qualified accountant (CIMA / ACCA / ACA)
  • Highly advanced Excel skills
  • Significant experience in using 3e, or other similar practice management system
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn to use new tools (e.g., Microsoft Power BI)

Your Skills

  • Previous experience in a legal sector role or other partnership structure is desirable but not essential
  • Ability to identify profit drivers and improvement opportunities through the analysis of P&L
  • Experience working with, and finance business partnering with, stakeholders across the business and have proven abilities in critically assessing detailed analysis and problem-solving
